Figure 1 Comparison of inclusions in an imported bearing steel (a) and a double low-oxygen rare earth bearing steel (b).

With the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (approval number: 52031013, U1708252, 51725103), Li Dianzhong, a researcher at the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led his team to cooperate with relevant research groups in the institute to make progress
in the field of low-oxygen rare earth steel research.
A large number of studies at home and abroad have shown that adding a trace amount of rare earth to steel can significantly improve the toughness, durability, heat resistance, corrosion resistance and other properties
of steel.
The work uses the self-invented inclusion extraction three-dimensional characterization technology to analyze the topography of inclusions in rare earth GCr15 bearing steel and imported bearing steel, and finds that alumina and large-size manganese sulfide inclusions are mainly in imported bearing steel at three-dimensional scale (Figure 1a), while the inclusions in rare earth bearing steel are mainly fine spherical rare earth oxygen sulfides (Figure 1b).
The work reveals the key mechanism of rare earth in steel, that is, to control inclusions and rare earth solid solution, prepare a low-oxygen rare earth steel with superior performance and stability, and only need to add more than 100 grams of lantanium cerium light rare earth to the ton of steel, which can significantly improve the performance of steel under the condition that the cost is basically unchanged and the process flow is basically unchanged, which is of great significance for giving full play to the advantages of China's rare earth resources, balancing the utilization of rare earth resources, and improving the quality of
excellent special steel.
