    (a) Maximum algal bloom area MBE (unit: km2), (b) algal bloom frequency BO (unit: %)

Figure 2 The relationship between the maximum algal bloom area (MBE) and the frequency of algal blooms (BO) in 65 countries around the world
    .

The 10 countries indicated by the black (grey) arrows correspond to the top 10 countries with the largest algal bloom area (frequency of algal blooms)

Lake algal blooms (plankton algae that accumulate on lake surfaces) are one of the most serious water environmental problems worldwide
    .

Although satellite remote sensing can accurately capture algal blooms, due to the significant spatial and temporal differences in lake backgrounds, there is currently a lack of automated algorithms for remote sensing monitoring of algal blooms in lakes at a global scale

Professor Feng Lian's research team developed a fully automatic discrimination algorithm based on the CIE (Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage, International Commission on Illumination) color space for remote sensing of algal blooms in lake waters.
Algal blooms were extracted from 248,243 freshwater lakes with an area of more than 0.
1 km2, and the first global lake algal bloom satellite remote sensing monitoring database was constructed
    .

The study found that algal blooms have occurred on six continents in the past 40 years, and a total of 21,878 lakes around the world have suffered from algal blooms (Figure 1)
    .

The cumulative outbreak area of global lake algal blooms reached 312,723.

The research results can not only provide basic data for the attribution and prediction of algal blooms in lakes, but also provide a scientific basis for governments and environmental agencies to assess the ecological, economic and social impacts of algal blooms, and provide decision-making references for formulating relevant policies
