On July 16, China and the EU reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris climate agreement and called on other signatories to do the same, saying action against global warming was more important
than ever.
China and Europe reaffirm commitment to Paris climate agreement and announce more cooperation
Following US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the climate agreement last year, China and the European Union have become the biggest supporters
of the 2015 climate agreement.
The Paris climate agreement aims to keep global temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius
.
In Monday's joint communiqué, the two sides stopped short of criticizing the United States but said the agreement proved that "multilateralism can succeed in building fair and effective solutions to the most critical global problems of our time.
"
The two sides expressed their continued commitment to a mechanism to transfer $100 billion annually from rich to poorer countries to help the latter adapt to climate change
.
And this mechanism has been a major point of
contention in the United States.
The EU and China also pledged to work closely together to promote effective solutions to emissions issues in aviation and shipping, and to consider further cooperation in emissions trading
.
Greenpeace said in a statement: "It is not just Trump who unites China and Europe, but China and the EU to understand the opportunities
offered by a clean and climate-safe world.
