Chile announced Tuesday that it will close eight coal-fired power stations over the next five years as part of
a plan to fully switch to renewable energy by 2040.

The 8 coal-fired power stations announced by Chile's conservative President Sebastian Pinera account for 20 percent, or 23,000 megawatts
, of the country's energy capacity.

"Our initiative today is a real act to deliver on our promises," Pinera said
in a speech in the highly polluted northern city of Tokopila.

As a net energy importer, Chile has become increasingly reliant on coal for power generation over the past decade, largely due to the cessation
of imports of Argentine natural gas.
Imports resumed last year under a new deal with Buenos Aires, leading Chile to reduce its reliance
    on coal.

About 40% of Chile's electricity generation comes from 28 coal-fired power stations
    .
According to the government's goals, Chile plans to phase out all coal power by 2040 and become completely carbon neutral
    by 2050.

By 2024, the closure of coal-fired power stations will reduce Chile's annual carbon dioxide emissions from the current 30 million tons to 4 million tons
    .

Once the coal-fired plants are shut down, Pinera said, they will remain in "operational reserve," ready to be operational
in case of an emergency for the next five years.
