British researchers have successfully "changed" the blood type of human donor kidney tissue from type B to type O, which is known as "universal blood", which means that in theory, patients can transplant these kidneys without blood type restriction.
According to the type of antigens on the surface of red blood cells in the blood, common human blood types are usually divided into 4 type.
Previous research has shown that an enzyme produced in the human gut removes relevant antigens from red blood cells, "converting" the original blood to type O bloo.
The British "Times" quoted Mike Nicholson, a professor of transplant surgery at Cambridge University, as saying on the 15th that they used a normal temperature perfusion machine to pump blood containing this special enzyme into multiple pieces of human kidney tissue with blood type .
A normothermic perfusion machine is commonly used to deliver oxygenated blood to the donor kidney in order to effectively maintain the function of the donor organ prior to transplantatio.
The next step, Nicholson says, is to apply the enzyme to the entire human kidne.
The researchers will conduct tests in the laboratory to assess how the kidneys function after changing blood type.
According to Nicholson, if the study is clinically successful, it will greatly increase the probability of matching donor kidneys, which is good news for patients with less common blood type.
