Medulloblastoma is one of the most common malignant brain tumors in children

MRD refers to tumor cells that exist after or during cancer treatment

"In the first few years after the treatment of patients, we often scan them, but unfortunately, when we see recurrence in the scan, there are already many diseases," the senior co-author of St.

"Through this test, we now know that if there is free DNA from medulloblastoma cells in the cerebrospinal fluid at the end of the treatment, the patient is likely to relapse," Robinson said

The right test to answer the right question

As part of the standard treatment for myeloblastoma, children undergo continuous spinal puncture to check for the disease

"There is a lot of interest in the concept of liquid biopsy for cancer, but for childhood brain tumors, this technology has not been optimized," said communications and senior author Dr.

Northcote and his team rely on a method called low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, which summarizes changes in the copy number of the whole genome (changes in the genetic code)

The results show that this method of detecting MRD can alert clinicians to the risk of recurrence earlier
