The “Invest in Cameroon” website reported on April 6 that the Cameroonian Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (Irad) has just released a report stating that despite the high demand for soft wheat ( bread making ) and durum wheat in five agro-ecological zones in Cameroon (Pasta making) varieties have been successfully experimented with, but due to lack of funds, it is difficult to expand the cultivation on a large scale
.
Irad said that an investment plan needs to be formulated so that the country can have more resources to ensure local input and support local agricultural development
.
For more than ten years, the Cameroonian Ministry of Agriculture has been conducting experiments on wheat cultivation in Adamawa and Western regions, but wheat has a great demand for fertilizer, at least 400 kilograms per hectare.
It may take a long time before mass adoption
.
Cameroon will produce more than 400,000 tons of wheat a year by sowing seeds in hills and mountains covering 700 to 2,000 square meters, Irad said
.
At this stage, the wheat production in Cameroon is still relatively low, only 66 tons/ha, mainly from the Northwest Region and Adamawa Region
.
Wheat is the third largest imported grain in Cameroon, after maize and rice
