Recently, California announced that it has become the first state
in the United States to authorize the use of solar energy in new homes.
On Wednesday, the California Energy Commission passed new building energy efficiency standards, including requirements for
installing photovoltaic arrays on new homes.
The proposal, which has been in work for two years, will require manufacturers to use "smart inverters" and offer optional energy storage
.
The President and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) said, "The combination of rooftop solar and the option to use energy storage systems as efficiency compliance credit provides builders with an attractive and cost-effective option
.
Other countries may not be ready to take this step, but it is a precedent for policy that will bring huge benefits and cost savings
to consumers.
I hope and believe that when other countries, many of which are rapidly developing their own solar markets, see the benefits of this policy, they will develop similarly positive policies
.
”
The commission estimated that homes built according to 2019 standards were 53 percent more energy efficient than homes built under 2016 rules
.
In addition, France requires new buildings to be partially roofed
on solar panels or green roofs.
Scotland's building regulations stipulate that many construction companies meet carbon limits
by increasing solar energy.
Back in 2016, San Francisco made rooftop solar projects
mandatory.
