If governments put in place the right policies, some 24 million green jobs
could be created globally by 2030.
By 2030, 24 million green jobs could be created globally
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), action to limit global warming to 2°C would create enough jobs under the Paris climate agreement to offset the projected loss of 6 million jobs elsewhere
.
By adopting sustainable practices in the energy sector, including changes in the energy mix, improving building energy efficiency and promoting the use of electric vehicles, these can create new jobs
.
The report estimates that the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe could create about 3 million, 12 million and 2 million jobs
, respectively.
Conversely, if the trend of reliance on fossil fuels and mining continues, the Middle East and Africa could see job losses
.
The projected warming due to climate change could bring heat stress, especially more common in agriculture, leading to exhaustion and strokes, resulting in a 2%
loss of global working time due to disease by 2030, the report added.
The ILO calls on countries to take urgent action to train workers in the skills they need for a greener economy and provide them with social protection to facilitate the transition
to new jobs.
