According to reports, the total global PV power generation will increase from 391 gigawatts in 2017 to nearly 600 GW by 2023, making PV capacity more than all other renewable energy technologies combined, or up to double Japan's total capacity
.
The International Energy Agency said in a report that "this growth is expected to continue, with solar PV capacity expected to reach 1,000 GW
by 2030.
" China remains by far the absolute solar PV sector, accounting for nearly 40%
of the world.
The U.
S.
remains the second largest growth market for solar PV, followed by India, which quadrupled
its production capacity.
”
The study also noted that wind will remain the second largest contributor to renewable energy growth, with an expected 60 percent increase and hydropower becoming the largest renewable energy
source by 2023.
According to the IEA, modern bioenergy will achieve the largest growth in renewable resources between 2018 and 2023, and renewable energy will continue to expand over the next five years, covering 40%
of the global energy consumption growth.
Their use will continue to increase rapidly in the power sector and will account for nearly one-third
of the world's total electricity generation by 2023.
The IEA Executive Director said, "Modern bioenergy is a neglected giant in the renewable energy sector
.
Its share of total world renewable energy consumption is currently around 50%.
Just like hydropower, wind, solar and all other renewable energy sources, coupled with the right policies and strict sustainability regulations, it is essential
to unlock the full potential of the bioenergy sector.
”
The report also highlights that the use of renewable energy is expanding much more slowly in the transport and heating sector due to weak policy support and deployment barriers
.
The development and growth of renewable energy in both sectors is therefore essential
to achieve a full transition to low-carbon pathways in energy production.
