Bharti Telecom ("Airtel"), a global telecommunications service provider, and Telekom Egypt announced a strategic partnership in which Airtel will acquire IRUs (irrevocable use rights) for the Middle East-North Africa Submarine Cable Cable (MENA)
and TE North Cable Systems cable systems.
In addition, Airtel will carry significant capacity
on two new state-of-the-art cable systems (SMW5 and AAE1) on a long-term basis.
The partnership granted Airtel the right to
use MENA cables from Egypt to India.
It also extends beyond the MENA Cable, where Airtel will get the transmission capacity from Egypt to France that the TE North cable system carries, as well as the capacity of the
SMW5 and AAE1 cable systems.
This partnership means that Bharti Telecom will be able to further diversify its global network to meet the significant increase in demand for data services, particularly in emerging markets in South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, while also benefiting from Egypt Telecom's existing interconnection network
.
Egypt's unique geographical location in the Red and Mediterranean Seas allows Telecom Egypt to connect more than 11 cable systems from the East and 13 cable systems from the West connected to the Red-Med Corridor, which includes 7 diverse routes
across Egypt.
Telecom Egypt's global network has been built over the years by investing in international submarine cable systems, namely: TE North, ALETAR, SEA-ME-WE-3, SEA-ME-WE-4, SEA-ME-WE-5, IMEWE, EIG and AAE-1
