Brain training is structured and repetitive exercises designed to improve cognitive function
Now, a research team led by associate professors Rui Nouchi and professors Ryuta Kawashima at the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer at Tohoku University in Japan A new training method involving neurofeedback has been developed that allows trainees to monitor their own brain activity while performing tasks
Neurofeedback has been used to enhance healthy brain function for decades
For this, study participants were divided into three groups
Brain training trained participants' processing speed, memory span and attention by playing three different games in each category
"We found that participants who underwent brain training with neurofeedback had considerable improvements in episodic memory, working memory and attention," Nouchi said
Details of the study were published in the journal Brain Science
Along with brain training, Nouchi emphasizes, more engagement may be the key to unlocking its benefits
