.
BNEF: Electric vehicles will require 2,000 terawatt hours of electricity in 2040
BNEF's latest forecast shows that global EV sales will grow from 1.
1 million in 2017 to 11 million in 2025 and 30 million by
2030.
Correspondingly, the share of electric vehicles in the global light-duty vehicle market will expand to 11% by 2025, 28% in 2030, 55% by 2040, and 33%
of the global automotive market.
"The EV sales outlook will be influenced by how quickly charging infrastructure expands in key markets, as well as the growth of
shared mobility.
" BNEF said
.
The adoption of electric buses will be even more rapid, and by 2030, 84% of all buses sold will be electric
buses.
BNEF noted that China already has more than 300,000 electric buses
.
BNEF said that by 2030, electric vehicles will account for 44% of light vehicle sales in Europe, 41% in China, 34% in the US, 17% in Japan and just 7%
in India.
The growth of electric vehicles will also create opportunities for lithium-ion battery producers, a market
dominated mainly by China.
As of 2018, China's lithium-ion battery production capacity accounted for 59% of the total global production capacity, and is expected to increase to 73%
by 2021.
