London-based BBOXX reportedly announced last week that it had signed an agreement with the Congolese government to ensure exemption from import duties and value-added tax
on solar equipment.
According to BBOXX CEO Mansoor Hamayun, this move has eliminated the high costs
associated with introducing panels and batteries.
He said BBOXX plans to offer customers kits that include panels, radios, batteries and multiple home appliances, as well as large systems
that power homes and small offices in areas such as cities.
Among them, solar electricity prices will start at $15 per month, and customers can pay through
the mobile phone platform.
He added, "It is expected that by the end of 2020, we can supply electricity to 2.
5 million people and install between
300,000 and 400,000 photovoltaic systems.
" Currently, the majority of Congolese income comes from paraffin, candles and diesel engines
for generators.
”
According to 2016 data from the World Bank, Congo has one of the lowest electrification rates in the world, with coverage of only 17% in rural areas, which is less than 1%.
