BASF announced on October 12 that it plans to invest in a world-class neopentyl glycol (NPG) plant with an annual capacity of 80,000 metric tons at its Verbund site in Zhanjiang,
China.
The new plant is expected to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2025, increasing BASF's annual global NPG production capacity from 255,000 tons to 335,000 tons
.
BASF currently has NPG production plants
in Ludwigshafen, Germany, Freeport Texas, Nanjing, China, and Jilin, China.
According to BASF, NPG is mainly used to produce powder coating resins as an intermediate with high chemical and thermal stability, and is particularly successful
in coating applications in the construction industry and household appliances.
Due to the low volatile organic compound (VOC) content of powder coatings, they can help users meet VOC emission standards, and VOC emissions can be reduced by up to 50%
compared to liquid coatings.
NPG is also used in the manufacture of lubricants, plasticizers and pharmaceuticals
.
"The investment in the NPG plant at the Verbund site in Zhanjiang will enable BASF to support the growing demand of customers in Asia, especially in the powder coatings sector
in China," said Siliang Hua, Senior Vice President of BASF's Intermediates Business Unit Asia Pacific.
The synergies created by BASF's unique integrated model, combined with cutting-edge technologies, will enhance our competitive advantage
in China, the world's largest industrial market.
" ”
Anup Pandey, Managing Director of Acids and Polyols, Intermediates Business Unit, Asia Pacific, said BASF will step up the construction of NPG plants in China to support the growth of its business partners, while expanding BASF's footprint and maintaining BASF's position
as a leading supplier in this broad market.
