BASF Light Stabilizer Adopted by China's Leading Building Materials Research Center
Improves the Durability of TPO Roof Waterproof Rolls, Reduces Maintenance Costs
More Durable, Reduces Environmental Impact
Shanghai, China - December 6, 2018 - China Suzhou Waterproof Research Institute (Suzhou Waterproof Research Institute) is China's leading waterproof materials research center, the Institute recently included BASF's Chimassorb®guang stabilizer in the thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roof waterproof coil standard program. As an alternative to asphalt coils, TPO roof waterproof coils are usually laid on flat roofs to protect buildings from heavy rains.
TPO roof waterproof coils are becoming more and more popular because of their excellent performance and easy-to-install features
the
. However, as with all polymers, TPO degrades prematurely when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and high temperatures, with small cracks, loss of stretch strength and fracture elongation, which in turn reduces wind resistance. The use of light stabilizers can alleviate this problem. Ultraviolet stabilizers like Chimassorb can play a particularly important role because they provide weather resistance and long-lasting strength, improving roof durability. Such stabilizers also need to be compatible and can be used in conjunction with all other formulation ingredients."Light stabilizers are critical for manufacturers of TPO roof waterproof coils, as the life of roof waterproof coils depends largely on the use of the right UV stabilizer," said Hermann Althoff, Global Senior Vice President,
BASF's Asia Pacific Characteristic Chemicals Division. Our stabilizer solutions help extend the life of our products and reduce their environmental impact compared to products with lower durability. The increased life of the product also helps to conserve resources and reduce the pressure of waste disposal. "
TPO roof waterproof coils are easy to recycle because they can be melted, purified and squeezed out again. Thus, the old TPO waterproof coil can be recycled to create a new TPO waterproof coil.
Wenbin Wang, research and development manager of Suzhou Waterproof Research Institute, said: "Because TPO roof waterproof coils need to resist the impact of bad weather on buildings, any degradation can lead to water leakage and damage. The use of Chimassorb-based stabilizer technology ensures the polymer's UV resistance and provides customers with more durable products.
BASF's range of photostabilizers includes UV absorbers that protect polymers from UV exposure and degradation, as well as blocked amine-like light stabilizers that remove free-forming intermediates formed by photooxidation processes.
