On June 27, the Asian Development Bank said it would provide Bangladesh with a $500 million loan to build an 800-megawatt power plant
in Kulna, a southwestern region.
Bangladesh receives $500 million loan from ADB to build a power plant
Gobinda Bar, a spokesman for the Asian Development Bank in Dhaka, said the use of the latest technology in power plants would help meet Bangladesh's growing demand
for clean energy.
The total cost of the project was $1.
14 billion, with $300 million from the Islamic Development Bank, $338.
5 million from the government, and a loan
from ADB.
The peak electricity demand of Bangladesh, which is prone to frequent power shortages, is estimated at 10,400 MW, compared to just 9,479 MW of usable capacity in 2017
.
Bangladesh's net peak demand is expected to exceed 13,300 MW by 2020 and 19,900 MW by 2025, while existing power generation facilities will be phased out and need to be replaced
.
"By providing additional power supply to about 300,000 consumers, the new power plant will spur business expansion and create new jobs
.
" ADB energy expert Aziz Yusupov said
.
The power plant, which will be completed by the end of June 2022, uses state-of-the-art water treatment processes to purify and recycle liquid waste, resulting in zero emissions
.
So far, ADB has provided about $5 billion in loans
to Bangladesh's energy sector.
