B2Gold will reportedly open the world's first fully automated hybrid solar power plant in Namibia as a way to reduce fuel consumption
in heavy fuel oil (HFO) power plants.
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, B2Gold approved the installation of a 7MW PV project at the mine, which was approved in October 2016 at an estimated cost of US$8.
5 million
.
The project was redeployed
as planned and budgeted in early April 2018.
The hybrid project is expected to reduce Otjikoto's HFO consumption by approximately 2.
3 million liters and reduce the associated power generation fuel costs by approximately 10%
in 2018.
Namibia's Minister of Mines and Energy said, "The plant will have positive economic, environmental and social impacts that are likely to continue
.
" In addition, the solar power plant will be the largest of its kind in Namibia
.
It will serve as a sustainable power solution as B2Gold works to improve economic efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and potentially become a source of
funding for community development.
