Over the past four years, seven of Australia's largest coal-fired power plants have been retired
.
Australia has closed seven coal-fired power plants in the past four years
According to sustainability law group Environmental Justice Australia (EJA), the closure of seven coal-fired power plants has reduced 96.
6 tonnes of toxic particulate pollution, 0.
87 tonnes of sulphur dioxide emissions, and 0.
31 tonnes of nitrogen oxide pollution
.
However, the EJA said coal-fired power generation remained Australia's main source of toxic particulate matter, emitting up to 8300 tonnes
.
The EJA claims that coal-fired power plants are also responsible
for 49 percent of NOx emissions and 54 percent of sulphur dioxide emissions.
Dr Ben Ewald, Bachelor of Arts and Public Health from Newcastle University, said: "Every time an older coal-fired power plant closes and is replaced by renewable energy, there are immediate health benefits
for communities within 100km of the facility.
”
In addition, Tesla's backup battery pack in South Australia has successfully prevented power
outages in the area.
