Recently, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced that it will work with the government to provide $23.
8 million in funding
for the next phase of the $44.
6 million solar conversion project (SETuP).
As part of the next phase of the SETuP project, the project will deliver a portfolio
of 5.
6MW PV projects in the Central Australia, Katherine, Top and Tivey Islands regions of the Northern Territory to 17 off-grid remote Aboriginal communities.
It is expected to be completed
in November 2018.
PV will be combined with diesel generators at 15 sites, including a 1 MW PV system in the Tiwi Island community in Wurrumiyanga, which will supply electricity
to three communities in the Bathurst and Melville Islands.
Once the second phase of the project is completed, the SETuP scheme will provide 10 MW of solar PV to the energy mix of 28 remote off-grid communities in the Northern Territory
.
Australia's Minister for Environment and Energy said: "The project provides an opportunity for off-grid remote Indigenous communities to reduce their reliance on
price volatility and seasonal transport issues.
It covers the breadth of the Northern Territory, from the Tiwi Islands in the north to Pluto in the south, demonstrating our commitment to providing cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy
for all Australians.
”
The project is co-funded by ARENA and the Northern Territory Government and managed
by the Northern Territory Power and Water Company.
