The Board of Directors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved a US$112.
3 million loan to Nepal to expand electricity supply and improve the quality and efficiency
of electricity supply in the western region of the country.
Although Nepal's electricity penetration rate is 78%, there are still large disparities
between regions.
Western Nepal has the lowest electricity coverage in rural and hilly areas, requiring significant investment
in the distribution network.
The distribution system upgrade and expansion project is AIIB's first sovereign financing project
in Nepal.
In 2018, Nepal received a US$1 million grant with support from the AIIB Special Fund to assist the government in preparing the electrification plan
for western Nepal in terms of feasibility studies, technical design, and environmental and social management.
The project, which covers 13 districts in Karnaly, will include the construction of 21 major substations and more than 2,000 km of transmission lines
.
This is a key project
to enhance the Nepal Electricity Authority's capacity to plan, analyse and modernize project network performance.
D.
J.
, AIIB's Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, said: "AIIB provides critical financing to Nepal to provide affordable, reliable and modern energy, especially in rural areas
where people lack infrastructure.
”
According to reports, the project will help more than 500,000 people gain access to new or improved electricity supplies
.
By investing in Nepal's energy sector, the AIIB hopes to encourage further infrastructure investment in the country, which will support Nepal's efforts
to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and drive economic growth, employment opportunities and poverty reduction.
