On December 20th, HortGro Pome announced that South African pears have officially gained access to the Chinese market
    .

As early as 2003, South Africa applied to export apples and pears to China.
After a long communication, South Africa's apples were allowed to enter the Chinese market in 2015
    .
With the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, the South African pear access protocol that was originally planned to be signed at the high-level meeting between China and South Africa in March 2020 was also forced to postpone
    .

After more than a year of waiting, on November 29, the General Administration of Customs of China signed and agreed to the South African pear access protocol
    .
The protocol was then sent to South Africa, and on December 13, the Minister of Agriculture, Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) Thoko Didiza completed the signing
    .

HortGro Pome is an organization representing the South African apple and pear industry, and is composed of 622 apple and pear producers in South Africa
    .
Jacques du Preez, General Manager of HortGro Trade and Markets, stated that the Asian market has achieved healthy growth in the past five years.
In 2021, the Asian market accounted for 22% of South African pear exports
    .
South Africa receives good winter precipitation this season, and it is expected that 2022 will usher in a good harvest
    .

At present, South African orchards and packaging plants have completed provisional registration with DALRRD and are preparing for remote online certification so that South African pears can be shipped to China smoothly
    .
In early 2021, HortGro launched a series of promotional activities for apples in the Chinese market, and soon South African pears will join them
    .

The South African pear industry has invested heavily in the construction of cold storage, which can almost achieve continuous supply to the world throughout the year
    .
Forelle is a South African late-ripening pear variety, with a greenish reddish skin and a sweet and crisp taste.
It is also one of the main pear varieties exported from South Africa to the world
    .
Forelle's export volume reaches its peak in the 12th or 13th week of the season, and can continue to be supplied until the end of the year.
It is expected to become the main product in the Chinese market
    .

HortGro statistics show that in 2020, South Africa's pear planting area will reach 12,913 hectares, with a yield of 438,468 tons
    .
The export volume is about 210,000 tons, accounting for about half of the total output
    .
