After obtaining federal approval for its groundwater management plan, India's Adani Group's thermal coal project in Australia is finally one step
    closer to leaving work.

Adani wants to develop the Carmichael coal mine in Queensland but faces fierce environmental resistance, making the project a "political hot spot" ahead of next month's
    federal election.

Environment Minister Melissa Price said on Tuesday the project still needed nine approvals from the federal and Queensland governments before mining
    could begin.

"This decision does not include final approval of the project," she said
    .

The groundwater management plan also needs to be approved by the state government, and the department is currently evaluating management plans
    for endangered birds.

While the Carmichael project will create jobs and have strong support in the region, the ruling conservative Liberal Party and the opposition Labour Party are worried about losing votes
in major cities where voters worried about climate change are located.

"We look forward to providing thousands of jobs to people in the northern and central Queensland region," Adani Mining chief executive Lucas said
    in a statement.

Queensland government officials told Reuters in February that Adani could have to wait two years to get some environmental clearance
    .

Adani said last year that it would go all out to fund
    coal mines and rail projects.
It did not give an updated estimate of mine costs, which were previously estimated at around A$4 billion ($3 billion).
