A few days ago, Jeffrey Sachs, a well-known American economist, said that getting rid of fossil fuels by 2050 and switching to large-scale renewable energy and nuclear power provides the best chance
to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement.
Achieving the Paris climate goals requires phasing out fossil fuels by 2050
Sachs, a professor at Columbia University, said the way the world produces and uses energy needs to change
faster and more dramatically than political leaders looking to tap into hydrocarbon reserves understand.
"So if we want to get to zero emissions, we need to move away from fossil fuels
faster than oil companies think.
" Sachs said
at a conference in the Cypriot capital on the climate change challenges facing Mediterranean countries.
Sachs said desertification, drought, crop failures and rising sea levels brought about by climate change are putting agriculture in the Middle East at serious risk
.
"The Earth has been functioning well for more than 8,000 years, and it would be
crazy to ruin it in this generation.
" Sachs, who is the sustainability adviser to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said: "Climate change is the trigger for conflict, mass migration, or everything else we can't properly handle
.
" ”
Sachs said the best approach is to build an interconnected grid, where zero-emission electricity from renewable sources in one area can be transmitted elsewhere
.
For example, an interconnected grid would allow North African and Middle Eastern countries to harness their abundant solar potential to transmit the generated electricity to cold and in-abundant sunshine in northern Europe
.
Sachs praised China as the current leader in the world's energy interconnection project and urged Europe to develop similar plans
.
Despite opposition to extracting the Eastern Mediterranean gas reservoir, Sachs urged countries to continue to advance these projects, take steps and accelerate the curb of carbon emissions, while preparing the economy for
carbon-free power generation.
Sachs, who also heads the Earth Institute at Columbia University, noted that Mediterranean countries could work together to draft proposals for mitigating challenges and present them at the UN Climate Summit
scheduled for September 2019.
