Health scientists from the University of Leicester, OBETA de Casalunya University from Spain, Transriver University of Science and Technology in Nigeria, UMM AQURA University in Saudi Arabia, and the pharmaceutical company AbZeNe have developed a pioneering antibody therapy to target and eliminate senescent cells.
Cell senescence is an irreversible phenomenon that occurs when the natural process of cell division in human tissues stops
As we all know, in laboratory specimens, removing senescent cells from tissues can slow down age-related degradation and extend lifespan
Researchers have now devised a new method to clear the deposits of these senescent cells, using antibodies as a "smart bomb" to identify and kill them
Dr.
"However, the drugs we have discovered so far are not specific and may therefore have strong side effects
"To replicate an idea that has been used in cancer treatment, we adjusted an antibody to recognize these cells and specifically deliver toxic substances to these cells
The results of this proof-of-concept study will now be used as the basis for further research on targeted treatment of aging, which may represent a huge advancement in the treatment of aging diseases
