Berry Superfos manufactures plastic scraps from packaging production that cannot be reused on-site into a variety of items, including components for biological water purification for aquaculture
.
As part of the production process at the company's factory in Randers, Denmark, most of the offcuts from production are collected and reused in production
.
Any unsuitable material is not discarded, but goes into the recycling stream
.
First, the scraps will be sent to a nearby plastic recycling company for processing, and then the manufacturer will buy the reprocessed plastic and turn it into some valuable products
.
One such producer is Denmark's Dania Plast, which produces a range of PP injection-molded parts for industrial use, including biomedia products sold under the RK BioElements brand
.
RK BioElements are used as biological filtration media for water purification in aquaculture and water treatment and are mainly sold to terrestrial recirculating fish farms around the world
.
These are all applying the principles of recycling by cultivating fish in closed water systems
.
Morten Primdal, CEO of Dania Plast, explains: "RK BioElements bio-purifies recycled water, so our products help to improve the environment and reduce water and energy consumption
.
Depending on the purpose of our products, recycled plastic is used in the production process.
The material is absolutely meaningful
.
"
Hanne Bloch Andreasen, site manager at Berry Superfos Randers, is equally pleased that this collaboration with the recycler and Dania Plast ensures that the scraps do not end up as waste
.
Hanne Bloch Andreasen, manager of Berry Superfos Randers, added: "We're delighted to know that any scrap that we can't use can be turned into something as creative and environmentally friendly as RK BioElements
.
We're always happy to contribute to a more circular economy.
Contribution, which is also an important part of Berry's Impact 2025 sustainability strategy
.
