Researchers at the Mount Sinai Light Health Research Center (LHRC) are constantly developing new devices to provide patients with healthy doses of light

Alzheimer's disease is a mind-bending brain disease that affects nearly 6.

"Light may be a powerful but often overlooked health factor," said Dr.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementia are neurodegenerative diseases that mainly damage the brain's memory center, temporal lobe and hippocampus

In this project, the LHRC team plans to test whether light pulses flashing at a frequency of 40 times per second or 40 Hz can not only increase the "gamma" electrical activity in the patient’s brain, but also counteract the effects associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Initially, the study will involve dozens of Mount Sinai patients who have been diagnosed with early Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment, which is usually a disorder before Alzheimer's disease

Brain wave activity is related to learning and memory

To test the possible role of the sleep-wake cycle in this process, the research team placed patients in high doses of daylight light each day, which are designed to help patients sleep better

Approximately 40% of Alzheimer's patients will experience sleep-related problems, including anxiety and daytime sleepiness

In this study, the sleep-wake cycle light will be provided by the same custom-made device or different devices, such as a table or lamp, which will allow a definite period of continuous exposure to the flash light every day

"Our sleep-wake cycle plays a key role in brain health," Figueru said
