new study, conducted by researchers at Griffith University in Australia and the Caroline School of Medicine in Sweden, found that eating more vegetables, exercised hard and quitting smoking can help reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease.
millions of people die prematurely each year from complications from chronic kidney disease, according to a press release from Griffith University. Researchers in Australia and The United States systematically evaluated more than 100 published papers to identify habits that could lead to kidney disease.
analyzed data from more than 2.5 million people in 16 countries and territories, they found that eating more vegetables, increasing potassium intake, exercise more, drinking moderately, reducing salt intake and quitting smoking reduced the risk of chronic kidney disease by 14 to 22 percent.
paper was published in the new issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Nephrology. Lead author Jaymond Kelly, of Griffith University, said lifestyle can have a significant impact on the risk of kidney disease, allowing doctors to make better clinical decisions and the general public to adjust their lifestyles to prevent kidney damage.
