As India and Bhutan mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment
to cooperate in the hydropower sector during the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tseling Togye on Friday.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announcement, the two leaders reviewed the progress
of bilateral economic and hydropower cooperation, including the implementation of the ongoing GoI auxiliary hydropower project in Bhutan.
"Both sides agreed that a strong partnership in the hydropower sector is mutually beneficial
," the announcement said.

The two sides reaffirmed their "commitment to further strengthening cooperation in the field of hydropower in the spirit of close friendship and cooperation, which characterizes
the relationship between India and Bhutan.

India is the main development assistance partner
of the Himalayan Kingdom.
India and Bhutan have many mechanisms for cooperation in the areas of security, border management, trade, economy, hydropower, development cooperation and water resources

At present, India has established three hydropower projects in Bhutan with a total capacity of 1,416 MW and are operational
.
About three-quarters of the electricity is exported to India, with the rest going for domestic consumption
.
